Samuel Hahnemann: The Founder
Homeopathy was founded by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician who became disillusioned with the harsh medical practices of his era — bloodletting, purging, and toxic heavy metal preparations that often did more harm than good. While translating a medical text, Hahnemann noticed that quinine — the treatment for malaria — produced malaria-like symptoms in healthy people. This observation led him to formulate the principle of similars: that a substance causing symptoms in health can cure similar symptoms in disease.
The Organon of Medicine
Hahnemann systematized his discoveries in the Organon of Medicine, published in 1810 and revised through six editions over his lifetime. The Organon remains the foundational text of homeopathic practice today, outlining not just the principles of similars and potentization but a complete philosophy of vital force, disease, and cure that continues to guide practitioners two centuries later.
Spread Across Europe and America
Homeopathy spread rapidly through 19th century Europe and America, particularly following its documented success during cholera epidemics of the 1830s and 1840s, where homeopathic hospitals reported mortality rates far below those of conventional medical institutions. By the late 19th century, there were over 20 homeopathic medical schools in the United States and thousands of practicing homeopathic physicians.
Modern Renaissance
Following a decline through much of the 20th century as pharmaceutical medicine rose to dominance, homeopathy has experienced a significant renaissance since the 1970s as part of the broader integrative medicine movement. Today it is practiced globally, with particular strength in India, Brazil, Germany, France, and the UK, where it remains part of the National Health Service.
